    Thank you, Anthony, for the video. However, you did not cover two new features of the Super Select AI. The first is that you can open a rectangle by click-drag and all parts within this rectangle are selected. The second feature is using the option/alt key, by which you can remove parts from the mask. You will see a minus sign besides the cross cursor instead of the plus when adding parts to the mask.

    Great video as always. I like James Popsys on UA-cam. I think he’s almost convinced me to take Sky’s away pretty much to saturation. Quite a unique look. Have a Quick Look when you get 5. His reasoning is that even a sky can distract from the subject.

    For me, DXO PL and ON1 NoNoise do a better job and don't need to fiddle or next to none. Topaz, ever since they went all AI, just not as good as it was before AI. Topaz AI sharpen far too often produces artifacts. Topaz Clarity was a nice program and quickly abandoned.

    Ironically, Nik plug-ins still don't work inside PhotoLab--you need to do initial RAW conversion in PL (or PureRaw) and then export to Nik (I do so in TIFF form) to apply any additional adjustments, if desired. IIRC, hovering used to preview the image--too bad they haven't re-instituted that. Now, that does work with Film Types (one of my favorite adjustments, as I used to shoot B&W film, although I invariably tweak them, as I do with any preset--even my own), at least it still does in SEP3 (Nik 6). BtW, I find Silver Efex's vignetting/edge burning to be very effective and flexible. As a huge Ansel fan (I finally got around to reading his autobiography--I'd recommend that as I would any of his writings--required reading for the serious photographer even if you've only shot digital), I love that the Zone System's addressed in Silver Efex, but the hatching can be hard to see in complex images--I wish they'd make it more prominent, perhaps as they show over/under exposure in PL. Of course, in keeping with Ansel and the "film feel" of Nik, I prefer to darken blue skies using using filters as you show, plus Nik has the added advantage over glass filters of being able to pick not only the desired wavelength, but the intensity (I'd also darken that bright cloud--kind of distracting, IMO,plus that would be a great way to show more advanced use of Control Points).

If your room is bright, or if your monitor is too bright, you risk editing your picture so that it's too dark. Sounds suspiciously like Skylum is up to its old tricks again. Spending resources developing and releasing a new product and losing interest in the old one. The last update to Luminar Neo had nothing much in it. Also I think you should mention that getting all the extensions is expensive if you bought Luminar Neo outright and extensions do not come with the base system. There are often sales but each extension costs and when not on sale cost quite a bit each.

    • @ShoeGod
      @ShoeGod 5 днів тому

      Everything you mentioned is true. However, the last update or 2 had performance enhancements which I really appreciated. I do like the fact that extensions are an option so that the price of the main app stays where it is. Also, even if I were to buy the app and extensions, it would still be cheaper than purchasing a subscription with Adobe. Luminar is experimenting with subscription models which I do not like. But at this time, it is still competitively priced to other options. As long as they don't strip away features from the portrait editing aspect of Neo, I can come to terms where they're going with this new app. Portrait editing is a niche segment of photography and many people may not need it or would greatly benefit from a more powerful portrait tool. We'll see how this goes.

    • @torbjornvonstrokirch7674
      @torbjornvonstrokirch7674 3 дні тому

      @@ShoeGod we shall see. Could perhaps have been a more expensive extension and then would be still supporting Neo but I guess they then would have had to give it to the subscribers and wouldn't have got as much for it. So instead they have a separate subscription model for Aperty. I would like to see some improvements in Neo's noise reduction and sharpening for a start and also speed improvements in all the 'AI' tools. They compare poorly to other products. I use ON1 PhotoRaw 2024 as well using Neo largely for landscapes where it's ease of use works but for wildlife and macro I go to ON1 where the noise reduction is far better and the sharpening is faster. ON1 is pretty cost competitive. I shy away from Adobe because I don't like corporate bullies.

    • @ShoeGod
      @ShoeGod 3 дні тому

      @@torbjornvonstrokirch7674 Valid points. I guess it depends on how powerful the standalone app is. If it turns out to be weak, then it definitely should be an extension. Improvements in the AI features in Neo definitely need some attention. I use ON1 as well (love it) and include it in my workflow if I need certain features that Neo does not provide.

    • @MikeRollerson
      @MikeRollerson 2 дні тому

      I use and enjoy Luminar Neo (and Photoshop, Lightroom, DXO, Nik, On1, Topaz, PortraitPro, Optics) and was really looking forward to the new Aperty app until hearing more and more about it. It definitely feels suspicious to only sell 1,000 full licenses to it, to only sell them as a preorder (months before release) and to give a sense of urgency to help move more copies (If you don't order now, you'll never have a lifetime license, you'll be stuck with a subscription). I have a lifetime license for Neo, but as you mentioned they hide a lot of extensions, presets, plugins and other tools (like the AI features) behind an additional paywall at a high price. Skylum has had a past of releasing applications (Luminar 4, Luminar AI) and then phasing them out to release a new application with a full-repurchase (Luminar Neo), which almost feels like a way around honoring the lifetime purchases as they're holding back updates behind a paywall. In the case of Adobe, 10 bucks a month will get you Photoshop AND Lightroom, with all of the AI features and new updates. I don't like the subscription models, but the updates that Adobe provides have been more than worth the price! I feel like Skylum/Luminar Neo has also had some issues with preorders in the past, where the advertised features look great (the AI pack they offered, the season pass), they force a payment up front with the same scarcity of "We're going to stop selling this, so order now!", only for the features to release months later and feel a bit lacking. I've spent plenty more on Luminar Neo after purchasing a lifetime license that it would have paid for 3-4 years of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, and I'm still being asked to upgrade my license to a monthly plan/membership or preorder this new product.

    • @mts389
      @mts389 15 годин тому

      Suspiciously? So Skylum should just work on new products, new features and give them away for free? Every software company want you to pay to buy more. That'a how business works!

    Thanks Anthony. Being a computer idiot, I find it easier to refine masks in LR ( wish that wasn’t so ) ie.. that first image, when you picked girl, I think it did a bad job. A lot of the green background was selected giving a bit of a halo when you increased exposure. In LR, I would select subtract object… then with small brush, it would easily grab that green color and subtract from mask. I can’t figure out how to do that in PS.

I’ve been in love with Silver Efex for more than a decade, but I’m not sure I need to dump another couple hundred (or whatever the price is) into a software upgrade that may or may not enhance my experience. It seems to me that the real power of an adjustment “brush” would be to use it as an actual brush, not as yet another selection tool. Why not use it to simply brush chosen adjustments to non-selected areas of a photo much as one would dodge and burn. Seems pretty straightforward to me and a whole lot more useful (in fact that is exactly how I use it…works great).

      Basically that's what I have been doing, especially to adjust tiny color variations in faces. Example: There is a slight yellow tinge to a facial area while most of face in natural color. The adjustment brush allows gentle and exact selection of the yellowed part, I can view the change as I adjust it to better match the rest of the face... NICE... ANTHONY may have covered that in one of his other segments, I'm going to check those now!!!!!

    Great tutorial, thank you! I've used the tool once, but will continue to use it in the future. (Though I do a lot of my color edits in Lightroom Classic.)
